Eimco Water Penalised for Inadequate Safety Measure ...

The Health and Safety Executive has once again issued a cautionary notice to all employers to re-evaluate and upgrade safety systems at work. The warning comes in the wake of an accident which seriously injured an employee of Eimco Water Technologies Ltd, a water filtration and purification unit based in Essex.

The company was slapped with a fine of £12,000 plus costs after they pleaded guilty to the charge of violating the 1974 Act pertaining to health and safety at workplace. Grzegorz Trafisz, the contractor, was injured and his pelvis fractured when a steel lock gate that had loosened from its hold came crashing onto him sometime in mid 2008, when he was working at the Marchwood Power Station.

The contractor was involved in a crucial operation in the water filtration process, wherein heavy equipment, in the form of parts of a screening mesh to filter solid waste and organisms from seawater, had to be assembled at an inflow point. The filtered water is diverted to power stations for use as coolant.

Given the fact that the job in question was risky, the HSE maintained that the company should have identified all possible risks and taken measures to protect employees from such injuries.

Eimco Ltd was accused of failing to provide proper mechanisms and follow safety practices during the operation. Following this accident and the subsequent judgement, the HSE is asking employers to assess risks and incorporate necessary safety norms in all work areas that are risk prone.
