If you are an Orange or a T-Mobile customer, this news would be of special interest to you. The two major players in the mobile broadband market have decided upon a merger to give rise to the largest mobile broadband provider in UK.
The move is expected to change the dimensions of the mobile broadband industry. However, the merger will not be finalized immediately and the companies have said that it will take around a year and a half to discard one of the brands and continue with the other. The new entity will however cater to the needs of a combined customer base of 28.4 million. This undoubtedly forms a major proportion of customers of the entire broadband market. The move will also result in lesser number of poles as well as lesser number of jobs, as the company currently has a combined workforce of 19,000 employees, some of whom will be given layoff notices.
T-Mobile, while giving further details, pointed out that the merger is all set to give the UK its biggest broadband provider that will offer better and faster service. It also added that the joint venture would ensure that larger investments can be made in improving technology and in providing better customer service. It further said that the merger would enable people to make use of 2G and 3G network coverage as well as provide access to a greater store network.
On the other hand, Orange has responded to the queries of current customers by saying that there will be no changes in the services and tariff of the customers, at least for the present. They will continue to receive normal services, as the merger is expected to take place only in the beginning of next year.
